The summer is well and truly over!

Following hot on the heels of the launch of Make Media 2012 CCMC is taking another bold step towards promoting deeper collaboration between the media across the divide with the launch of its groundbreaking Incentive Awards for Media Collaboration.

Many of you will remember, or will have been involved in, the Collaborative Media Initiative, or CMI for short, a project run under the auspices of CCMC. Well, the final report entitled “A Potential Untapped: Media Working Together across the Divide in Cyprus” (read the whole report on our issuu account) recommended that CCMC continue its work in promoting professional collaboration between the media in Cyprus, as well as position itself strategically as a ‘first point of call’ for all interested in working with colleagues based across the divide.

Graffiti for Peace

 Another Initiative funded by the Small Grants Programme “Youth Powers”.

The young people of Cyprus gathered and express themselves through the art of Graffiti. The initiative was an idea of Petros Herakleous and was funded by the Small Grants Programme “Youth Powers”. The aim of the project was to promote the peace and reconciliation among the Greek and Turkish Cypriot youth through the art of graffiti. The project had the support of the Greek Cypriot organization “Peace Centre” and the Turkish Cypriot association “E.M.A.A: European Mediterranean Art Association”.

The project implemented in four phases. In the first phase it the participants and the artists disgusted about the political perception of the art and how the artists may endorse the ideals of peace and reconciliation through their work. During the first phase, the participants developed their skills in the art of graffiti with the help of experienced graffiti artists. During the second phase it took place a demonstration by graffiti artists. In the third phase groups of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriot youth created their own graffiti. In the fourth phase it took place an exhibition of the art work of the participants  to the public in Limassol and Famagusta.

The Buffer Zone became a place of art, creativity full of “youth” and “power”, the art work of the participants is still there giving a positive message. The young people from the two communities met each other and exchanged views through the art of graffiti leaving behind any kind of stereotypes. The youth of Cyprus gave the message of peace.

Graffiti for peace begins – Η τέχνη του Graffiti ενώνει τους Νέους της Κύπρου

Η πρωτοβουλία “Graffiti for Peace” έχει ως στόχο να προωθήσει μηνύματα ειρήνης και συμφιλίωσης μεταξύ των νέων της Κύπρου μέσω της τέχνης του graffiti.

Απευθύνεται σε νέους άνω των 16 χρονών και δεν έχει κόστος συμμετοχής. H Campuscy είχε μία ενδιαφέρουσα συνομιλία με τον Project Manager της πρωτοβουλίας, Πέτρο Ηρακλέους.

Χαίρεται Πέτρο, αρχικά θα θέλαμε να μας πεις λίγα λόγια για τη συγκεκριμένη πρωτοβουλία;
Το “Graffiti for Peace”είναι ένα project που είχα εισηγηθεί στο “Youth Power”, για τον πρώτο γύρο μικρών επιχορηγήσεων, τον περασμένο Μάρτιο. Είχα την στήριξη της Ελληνοκυπριακής οργάνωσης “Peace Centre” και της Τουρκοκυπριακής οργάνωσης καλλιτεχνών “E.M.A.A: European- Mediterranean Art Association”. Το project ασχολείται με την τέχνη του graffiti, έχει επιλεχθεί αυτή η μορφή τέχνης διότι το graffiti είναι μέσο έκφρασης επαναστατικών ιδεών. Στη συγκεκριμένη όμως περίπτωση το graffiti έχει επιλεχθεί για να σταλούν τα μηνύματα της ειρήνης και της συμφιλίωσης.

Υπάρχει όμως και το στερεότυπο ότι η τέχνη του graffiti είναι μία μορφή βανδαλισμού, πώς η συγκεκριμένη πρωτοβουλία θα καταφέρει να σπάσει το συγκεκριμένο στερεότυπο και να περάσει παράλληλα και το μήνυμα της ειρήνης;
Κοίταξε, αν και δεν είμαι καλλιτέχνης graffiti επειδή όμως έχω συζητήσει το συγκεκριμένο θέμα με καλλιτέχνες graffiti, τα υβριστικά και τα οπαδικά συνθήματα όπως και τα ναζιστικά σύμβολα δεν αποτελούν graffiti. Το να πιάνεις δηλαδή ένα σπράυ και να γράφεις στους τοίχους οι καλλιτέχνες graffiti δεν το αναγνωρίζουν ως τέχνη. Οι καλλιτέχνες για να ζωγραφίσουν σε τοίχους παίρνουν τη σχετική άδεια από τον ιδιοκτήτη, εμείς όμως δεν θα ζωγραφίσουμε πάνω σε τοίχους αλλά σε ειδικούς πίνακες που έχουν αγοραστεί για το συγκεκριμένο σκοπό και οι συμμετέχοντες θα ζωγραφίζουν πάνω σε αυτούς.

Ένας από τους στόχους είναι και η ανάπτυξη της δημιουργικότητας, ποιες δράσεις θα γίνουν στα πλαίσια της συγκεκριμένης πρωτοβουλίας;
Το project θα υλοποιηθεί σε 4 φάσεις. Κατά τη διάρκεια της πρώτης φάσης καλλιτέχνες από διάφορους χώρους θα μιλήσουν για την πολιτικοποίηση της τέχνης και πως μέσω της τέχνης μπορούν να στείλουν μηνύματα ειρήνης και συμφιλίωσης, μέσω video projector θα δείξουμε graffiti διασήμων καλλιτεχνών όπως ο Banksy και ο Έλληνας καλλιτέχνη Bleeps. Στη συνέχεια θα υπάρξει μία συζήτηση και ακολούθως διάφορα εργαστήρια έτσι ώστε οι συμμετέχοντες και από τις δύο κοινότητες να γνωριστούν καλύτερα μεταξύ τους, ακολούθως οι καλλιτέχνες θα δείξουν βασικές αρχές του graffiti και θα κάνουν μαθήματα graffiti στους συμμετέχοντες, δηλαδή δεν χρειάζεται οι συμμετέχοντες να έχουν από πριν κάποιες δεξιότητες. Κατά τη διάρκεια της δεύτερης φάση οι συμμετέχοντες θα καλεστούν ατομικά να δημιουργήσουν το δικό τους σχέδιο μέσω του οποίου θα διαφανούν οι αντιλήψεις τους σχετικά με την ειρήνη και τη συμφιλίωση στην Κύπρο. Ήδη, από την πρώτη φάση θα έχουν διδαχθεί πώς να χρησιμοποιούν το σπράυ, ακόμη μπορούν να ετοιμάσουν και από πριν ένα προσχέδιο πάνω σε ένα χαρτί. Στη δεύτερη φάση θα υπάρξει επίδειξη από τους καλλιτέχνες για το πώς δημιουργούμε ένα graffiti και επίδειξη πάνω σε stencil. Το stencil είναι ειδική τεχνική στο graffiti που χρησιμοιποιείται από πολλούς διάσημους καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Banksy, συγκεκριμένα κόβουμε το χαρτί και ζωγραφίζουμε το σχέδιο που θα θέλαμε να κάνουμε και ακολούθως το βάζουμε πάνω στην επιφάνεια που θέλουμε να κάνουμε το graffiti, η συγκεκριμένη τεχνική χρησιμοποιείται για να γίνει ένα graffiti γρήγορα. Στην τρίτη φάση θα δημιουργηθούν μεικτές ομάδες Ελληνοκυπρίων και Τουρκοκυπρίων και κάτω από την καθοδήγηση ενός καλλιτέχνη graffiti θα δημιουργήσουν το δικό τους graffiti. Τέλος, στην τέταρτη φάση θα υπάρξει έκθεση των έργων για το ευρύτερο κοινό, στην Λεμεσό και στην κατεχόμενη Αμμόχωστο.

Πέρα από το κίνητρο της δημιουργίας νέων γνωριμιών και της νεανικής ατμόσφαιρας τι άλλο έχουν να αποκομίσουν οι νέοι μέσα από τη συγκεκριμένη πρωτοβουλία;
Πιστεύω ότι πολλοί νέοι θα θέλουν να μάθουν για την τέχνη του graffiti η οποία είναι πολύ διαδεδομένη στο εξωτερικό και θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να χρησιμοποιήσουν εντελώς δωρεάν τα σπράυ. Ακόμη, προσωπικά πιστεύω ότι είναι μία καλή ευκαιρία να γνωριστούν καλύτερα Ελληνοκύπριοι και Τουρκοκύπριοι νέοι μέσω κοινών δρατηριοτήτων. Επιπλέον, πιστεύω ότι είναι μία ευκαιρία να καταρρίφθούν κάποια στερεότυπα που έχει η μία κοινότητα για την άλλη.

Όπως μας είχες αναφέρει το “Graffiti for Peace” επιχορηγείται από το πρόγραμμα μικρών χορηγιών “Youth Power”, θα μπορούσες να μας μιλήσεις λίγο για το συγκρκριμένο πρόγραμμα.
Το Youth Power αποτελείτε από διάφορες οργανώσεις και αναλαμβάνει πρωτοβουλίες προκειμένου οι νέοι να εμπλακούν περαιτέρω στα κοινά.

Me and Youth Work: A life-changing experience, every time everywhere

The 20th and the 21st centuries are characterized by the elimination of geographical borders, which means that is easier to travel abroad and come in touch with other cultures. The question that could be raised is how does the current situation affect the development of the human being and which is the key role of the youth worker? Youth work is a means to interact with people from different socio-cultural backgrounds so it might be a unique opportunity to discover yourself and get over some biases that you have never identifieded before due to your existing situation.

26/12/2010: Day 5: The Arab perspective

The 5th day of the intereriligious experience was very important for me since I got over almost all my stereotypes.In the first session we shared some common aspects and ideas between Cristianity,Judaism and Islam.I got impressed by the fact that those religions have more similarities than differences in terms of philosophy.The three religions share common views in terms of  love,sympathy and kindness.The question that arises is why do we spot on the differences?During the second session we celebrated the “Merry Islam Holy Day”,the Ramadan.It was an interactive presentation full of music,dance,wishes and sweets.Moreover,I learnt about the “halal” meat and I found that approach very interesting.The Arab participants gave me a strong incentive to fight against the islamophobia.

25/12/2010: Day 4 Scandinavian,Baltic and Mediterranean Celebrations

On the 25th December of the 2010,I went at the Christmas mass after many years.I woke up at 6:00am,I met some other participants and we went to the Christmas mass.After I called to my relatives to wish them Happy Christmas,when I announced them that I had attended the Christmas mass almost nobody believed me.When we returned from the church we have breakfast and we exchange Christmas wishes with the other participants.It was something very unique for me,Christians,Muslims and Jews were exchanging wishes full of love and prosperity,even though,some of them do not recognize Christmas as a holy day.

Then,there was a presentation from the Swedish and the Estonian team about Christmas celebration in their countries.I have to admit that both of them were very well organized.The participants moved for a while in the Swedish Christmas mood through the mysterious and calm atmosphere of the presentation.The awe inspiring Swedish presentation followed the vivid Estonian presentation,in an imaginary flight with only one destination,Estonia.From the Estonian presentation I liked the Estonian version of the song “Oh!Christmas Tree” and the cookies.Later,we celebrate the Christmas in the Cypriot way,singing Cypriot Christmas carols and dancing Cypriot dances.After,the multicultural Christmas celebrations the participants exchanged Christmas presents.Later we all celebrated Christmas dancing all night long under the sound of the disco songs.

24/12/2011: Day 3,Shabbat and Merry Lithuanian Christmas Eve

The 3rd day begun by a religious tour in the city center of Nicosia,the non-occupied part.We visited the Catholic church,then the Maronite Church,then the Orthodox Church and at the end the mosque.It is remarkable that all those religious monuments are really closed passing a message of acceptance and tolerance towards the people. Each community in Cyprus has its own religious monuments,as a result,it has its own contribution to the cultural and historical heritage of the island.During the city tour,almost all the participants had been identified with one of the monuments.The most impressive thing  for me until then, it was when the Muslims went to the mosque for the pray of Friday.Before,I knew that the Friday is the Muslim’s Holy day but I had never seen people going to the mosque in order to pray.While we were waiting for our Muslims friends to finish their pray we exchanged many nice ideas about the common aspects of the different religions.

After the tour,I had another really intensive experience, the Shabbat.I was looking forward to experience Shabbat,due to the fact that I was completely ignorant.It was the first time that I saw a “kippah”  (literally means dome). The ceremony was something really new for me and at the same time something really closed to me.During the ceremony,it emerged something between awe,tranquility and joy.The Shabbat ceremony succeed the ceremony of the Lithuanian Christmas Eve.During the ceremony we exchanged wishes expressing grateful feelings. The “saying thank you” costume it was something really awesome because, nowadays,we become more and more ignorant about the real meaning of that phrase.The most interesting it was an interactive game that gave us the opportunity to learn more about the Lithuanian history and culture.

Before,going to bed I went to buy a Christmas present because the next day,Christmas,we were going to exchange presents.
